PDF documentation

The Toolbench PDF tools run in your browser. Files are processed on your device with pdf-lib and pdf.js, so they are never uploaded.

Quick start

  1. Pick a tool

Choose Merge, Split, Compress or any other tool from the directory.

  2. Add your file

Drag a PDF onto the page, paste it, or choose it from your device.

  3. Download the result

The new file is saved straight from your browser. Your original is never changed.

Tools

Organize pages

  • Merge PDF: Combine several PDFs into one file, in the order you choose.
  • Split PDF: Cut a PDF into several files by page ranges.
  • Organize PDF: Reorder pages visually using the arrows below each thumbnail.
  • Extract pages: Pick pages from a PDF and save them as a new file.
  • Delete pages: Remove the pages you do not need from a PDF.
  • Replace a PDF page: Swap one page of a PDF for a page from another PDF or for a JPG or PNG image, keeping every other page in place.
  • Alternate and mix: Interleave the pages of two PDFs, for example front and back scans.

Edit and layout

  • Edit PDF: Add text, drawings, highlights, shapes and a signature to your pages.
  • Sign PDF: Draw or type your signature and stamp it on a page of your PDF.
  • Rotate PDF: Turn every page of a PDF by 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
  • Crop PDF: Trim the margins of PDF pages by a set number of millimetres.
  • Add PDF page numbers: Add page numbers to every page of a PDF in one of six positions.
  • Add header and footer to PDF: Put text, page numbers, the date or the title at the top and bottom of PDF pages, on all pages or a range.
  • Resize pages: Change every page to a standard paper size such as A4 or Letter.
  • Pages per sheet: Pack several pages onto each sheet for compact printing.
  • Watermark PDF: Stamp diagonal text across every page of a PDF.
  • Compare PDFs: Find the text differences between two PDF versions, word by word and page by page, with the pages side by side.
  • Edit metadata: Inspect and update the title, author, subject and keywords of a PDF.
  • Fill PDF form: Fill in the text boxes, checkboxes, choices and lists of a PDF form, then save it, flattened if you like.

Security and cleanup

  • Protect PDF: Lock a PDF with an AES-256 password so it cannot be opened without it.
  • Unlock PDF: Remove the password and restrictions from a PDF you own.
  • Redact PDF: Black out areas of a page. Every page becomes an image, so the content underneath is removed, not just covered.
  • Flatten PDF: Turn each page into an image so form fields and marks become fixed page content.
  • Remove annotations: Delete comments, highlights and other marks, and optionally form fields.
  • Remove PDF metadata: Strip the hidden title, author, software, dates and XMP data from a PDF in one click, with a preview of what is there.

Compress and optimize

  • Compress PDF: Make a PDF smaller by shrinking its images while keeping the text, to a target size, or by turning pages into images.
  • Grayscale PDF: Convert pages to gray, or to pure black and white for a scanned look.

Convert

  • PDF to JPG or PNG: Save every page of a PDF as a JPG, PNG or WebP image at 72, 150 or 300 dpi, zipped when there are several.
  • JPG and PNG to PDF: Combine JPG or PNG images into a single PDF, one image per page.
  • Text, Markdown or HTML to PDF: Turn plain text, Markdown or simple HTML into a clean PDF with headings, lists, code, links and tables.
  • Word to PDF: Turn a Word .docx file into a PDF in your browser. Text, headings, lists, tables and pictures are kept; page layout is approximate.
  • PDF to text: Extract the text of a PDF as a plain text or Markdown file.
  • OCR PDF: Recognize the text of scanned pages and download a searchable PDF.
  • PDF to Word: Convert a PDF to an editable Word document (.docx) with headings, paragraphs and lists. Layout is approximate.
  • Scan to PDF: Photograph pages with your camera or pick photos, clean them up like a scanner and save them as one PDF.
  • PDF to PowerPoint: Turn each PDF page into a slide of a PowerPoint file (.pptx). Slides are pictures, so the text is not editable.
  • Excel to PDF: Convert XLSX, XLS, ODS or CSV spreadsheets to PDF tables. Choose the sheets, the paper and the orientation.
  • PDF to Excel: Pull simple tables out of a PDF into an Excel workbook (.xlsx) or a CSV file, one sheet per page.
