Your files stay on your device

Toolbench processes files in your browser. Files you open are read, changed and saved on your device and are never uploaded to us or anyone else. There are no accounts, and we keep no copy of your files or of the results.

Microphone, camera and screen

A few tools, such as the voice recorder, the screen and webcam recorders and Scan to PDF, can use your microphone, your camera or a screen you choose to share. Your browser asks you first, and they are used only while that tool is recording or its camera view is open, then released when you stop or leave the page. The sound, pictures and recordings are processed on your device and are never uploaded.

What is processed when you visit

The site is served by Cloudflare as static files. Like any web server, it receives your IP address and the request details needed to deliver the page. In addition:

  • Cloudflare Web Analytics: counts page views and measures how fast pages load (Core Web Vitals). When a page loads, Cloudflare receives the page address, the referring page, timing measurements, and the browser, operating system, device type and approximate country derived from the request. It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device; visitors are not identified across days.
  • OCR language data: the first time you run text recognition, the browser downloads the recognition engine and English language data from this site and caches them in your browser's IndexedDB for next time. No other site is contacted; your document stays on your device.
  • Encoders loaded on demand: some formats need an encoder that is downloaded from this site the first time you use them. It runs in your browser like the rest of the tool.
  • Image models loaded on demand: face detection and background removal download their model and runtime from this site the first time you use them, and your browser keeps them in its cache. No other site is contacted; your photos stay on your device.
  • OpenStreetMap link: the image metadata viewer shows a photo's GPS position as text with a link to openstreetmap.org. No map is loaded; OpenStreetMap receives the coordinates only if you follow the link.

Stored on your device

The site remembers your light or dark theme in your browser's local storage. Some screens also remember layout choices there, such as a collapsed side panel. The PDF tools keep the file you are working on in your browser's IndexedDB while this tab is open, so it is still there when you switch tools. It stays on your device and is removed when you close the file, or when you close or reload the tab where the browser allows it. If something is left behind, for example after the browser crashes, it can no longer be opened after 4 hours and is deleted the next time you use the tool. The other tools never store your files. You can clear this data in your browser settings at any time.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data and to object to its processing, and to complain to a data protection authority. Because we do not receive your files or identify you, there is usually no personal data for us to return. Write to <contact email address> with any question.
