File type inspector
Check a file's real type from its content, its size and dates, and spot a wrong extension.
Drop files to inspect
or drop them here, or paste. Up to 2.0 GB per file.
Runs in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.
The type is detected from the first bytes of the file, not from its name. Plain text, CSV and source code have no signature, so they show as not detected.
How to use File type inspector
Drop one or more files.
Read the verdict: whether the content matches the extension.
Check the size, last modified date, the type the browser reports and the type detected from the content.
Look at the first bytes of the file shown in hex.
Questions
No. Files are read in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
It looks at the signature at the start of the file's content, not at its name. If the content points to a different type than the extension, you get a warning.
Plain text, code and many data formats have no signature, so this is normal for them. It does not mean the file is damaged.
