GZIP compress and decompress
Compress a file to .gz or unpack a .gz file with your browser's own GZIP support.
Drop a file to compress or a .gz file to unpack
or drop it here, or paste. Up to 2.0 GB per file.
Runs in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.
GZIP compresses one file at a time and uses your browser's built-in support. Decompression stops at 2 GB or at a compression ratio above 200 to 1.
A .tar.gz file unpacks to a .tar file; use a desktop tool to open the TAR.
How to use GZIP compress and decompress
Drop a file. A .gz file is set to decompress, anything else to compress.
Change the action to Compress to .gz or Decompress .gz if needed.
Select Compress or Decompress.
Download the result.
Questions
No. GZIP runs in your browser using its built-in compression support, and the file stays on your device.
Compressing adds .gz to the name. Decompressing removes .gz, so notes.txt.gz becomes notes.txt, and a .tgz file becomes a .tar file.
GZIP compresses a single file. To pack several files into one archive, use Create ZIP.
Decompression is stopped if the result would be larger than 2 GB or expands more than 200 to 1, which can indicate a zip bomb.
